The Gift That Fills Your Seats: Introducing Stored Value Gift Cards
Every organizer has heard some version of this conversation: "I'd love to get my sister tickets to something, but I have no idea what she'd want to see." Or: "I want to give my team a fun outing as a bonus, but our schedules never line up with any single event."
Gift-giving for experiences has always had an awkward gap…paper certificates that only work for one specific show, gift codes that expire before anyone gets around to using them, or the blunt-force option of just handing someone cash.
We just closed that gap. Stored value gift cards are now live on Passage, and they turn one of the trickiest categories of gift-giving into one of the easiest…while giving you, the organizer, a new channel for revenue and new-customer acquisition that runs largely on autopilot.
Here's what's new, why it matters for your business, and how to get it running today.
What Does "Stored Value" Actually Mean?
Older gift card models are usually single-use: a code worth a fixed amount, redeemable against one specific product or event, often with the awkward experience of losing "leftover" value if the purchase doesn't line up exactly.
Stored value works differently. When a customer buys a gift card from you, the recipient redeems it and the dollar amount is loaded as account credit, not a one-time code. That credit automatically applies at checkout across anything you sell: it covers item price, fees, and sales tax, and it stays on the account until it's used. If someone buys a $50 gift card and a ticket costs $37, the remaining $13 doesn't vanish…it's still sitting there for next time.
The practical effect: a gift card is no longer a bet on picking the "right" event for someone. It's an open invitation to your entire catalog. That flexibility is what makes people comfortable buying gift cards as gifts in the first place. Nobody wants to give something that might go to waste.

Why This is Worth Your Attention
It's easy to file "gift cards" under customer-facing nice-to-have and move on. We'd push back on that a little. A few reasons this is a genuine growth lever:
-
It's a built-in acquisition channel. Every gift card purchased is, by definition, being given to someone who isn't already in your system as a customer. Your existing audience is essentially doing your marketing for you…introducing friends, family, and coworkers to your events without you spending a dollar on ads.
-
It lifts average order value with almost no friction. Because gift cards can be offered as an upsell at checkout ("want to add a gift card to your order?"), you get a natural moment to increase the size of every transaction. Someone who's already committed to buying a ticket is in a buying mindset: a small additional ask for a gift card is a low-resistance add-on.
-
It smooths out seasonal demand. Gift cards tend to sell heavily around holidays, birthdays, and other gifting occasions…periods that don't always line up with your event calendar. Selling a gift card in December for redemption in March gives you visibility into future demand and revenue that's already in the door before the event even happens.
-
It reduces the "I don't know what to get them" friction that stops gifting altogether. Since the credit applies across your whole catalog rather than one specific event, gift-givers don't need inside knowledge of what the recipient wants. That turns a hesitant maybe into an easy yes.
How Do Stored Value Gift Cards Work?
Setting it up takes just a few steps inside your existing product tools. There's no separate gift card system to learn.

-
Create a product for your gift card. Name it whatever fits your brand: "Gift Cards," "Gift Certificates," whatever feels natural to your customers.
-
Check the "This is a Gift Card" box. This flags the product to behave as stored value rather than a standard item.
-
Set your denominations. Add variants at the bottom of the product settings for each dollar amount you want to offer (for example, $25, $50, $100). These become the selectable options customers see when purchasing.
-
Choose the redemption landing page. Decide where a customer lands after redeeming: your full events page, or a specific event, depending on how broadly you want the credit to apply.
-
Set visibility. Gift cards are purchased online, so you'll choose between:
-
Online: Upsell (offered to customers after they've added tickets to their cart)
-
Online: Standalone (purchasable on its own, adding a "Purchase Gift Card 🎁" button directly to your event and venue pages)
-
Choose where it's available for sale. Select which events (for Upsell or Standalone) and venues (Standalone only) the gift card product should appear on.

That's it! No separate redemption portal, no manual balance tracking. The credit lives on the customer's account and applies automatically the next time they check out.
How Can I Make Gift Cards Work for My Events?
-
Run a holiday push. If your events skew toward a slower season, promote gift cards heavily in the weeks before major gifting holidays, they can generate revenue well ahead of the events themselves.
-
Turn your upsell on before your next big on-sale. If you have a high-demand event coming up, that's a moment when checkout traffic…and gift card upsell exposure…will be at its highest.
-
Offer them as a corporate or group gifting option. Teams and companies looking for an easy outing gift often default to whatever's simplest to buy in bulk; make sure that's you.
-
Cross-promote across your venues. If your account covers multiple events or locations, standalone gift cards are a good way to introduce fans of one show to everything else you offer.
How Do I Get Started?
If you're already selling products through your account, this is a quick add: most organizers can have a gift card live in under ten minutes. For the full step-by-step setup, including screenshots, check out our detailed setup guide.
Gift cards used to be a small, slightly clunky corner of the ticketing experience. With stored value, they're a real channel: one that brings in new customers, lifts order value, and gives your audience an easy way to share the experiences they love. Worth turning on before your next rush of gift-giving traffic.
