Have you ever sat at your computer on a Wednesday night, constantly refreshing your ticketing dashboard…just hoping to see one sale trickle in?
By Friday night, guests might be lined up for a sold-out event. But why do they have to wait until the last minute to make plans? Why do we always have to suffer through the slow-sales-anxiety all week?
People want to go to your event, but human nature makes them delay pulling out their credit card until the absolute last minute. And honestly, it’s only gotten worse over the past few years.
So, how do you fix the wait-and-see problem? You introduce urgency (time or inventory is running out) and FOMO (the Fear Of Missing Out). You don’t need to be slimy or overly sales-y about it. When used ethically, urgency isn't a marketing trick; it's a helpful nudge that gets attendees to finally commit to a great experience.
Here are four ways to build urgency and FOMO into your ticketing strategy from day one.
In our previous Event Marketing Basics post, we talked about Early Bird Pricing. That’s the classic example of time-based urgency: buy before this date, or the price goes up. But to really make time-based urgency work, you have to make the clock visible.
Countdown Timers: Put a countdown timer right on your event website or ticketing page. Seeing the seconds tick down to a price increase is a powerful psychological trigger.
"Last Chance" Emails: Don't just quietly raise your prices. Send a dedicated email 24 to 48 hours before a price tier jumps to capture the procrastinators.
Flash Sales: Create a 48-hour flash sale for opening weekend. A short, strictly enforced window forces buyers to make a quick decision.
One of the most effective ways to create FOMO is by using your ticketing platform’s inventory tools to your advantage, particularly if you run a high-demand event like a festival or a seasonal pop-up.
Instead of only selling standard General Admission tickets, use timed-entry ticketing. When you cap the capacity for your prime-time slots (like 8-9 p.m. on a Saturday), those slots naturally sell out faster.
Seeing "SOLD OUT" plastered across your prime time slots creates instant social proof. It tells the buyer: this event is hot. That scarcity creates immediate FOMO, pushing them to quickly secure a 10 p.m. slot or a Friday night ticket before those disappear, too. You get the dual benefit of driving advance sales and better controlling your crowd flow at the gate.
FOMO only works if people actually know that things are selling out. You have to communicate your scarcity loudly and proudly.
Low Inventory Indicators: Show exactly how many tickets are left for a specific time slot or VIP tier (e.g., "Only 15 tickets remaining!").
Social Media Milestones: Post regular updates on your social channels. A post that says, "Saturday night is 80% sold out—grab your tickets now!" creates much more urgency than a generic "Buy tickets today" post.
User-Generated Content: Share photos and videos of a packed, excited crowd having an amazing time. Show them exactly what they will miss out on if they wait too long.
FOMO isn't just about missing the event entirely; it’s also about missing the best possible version of the event.
You can drive immediate urgency by creating highly restricted VIP tiers. Offer a package that includes Fast-Pass lane access, exclusive merchandise, or access to a private VIP lounge. The trick? Cap these VIP tickets at a very low number.
Because the inventory is so limited, these tickets will naturally sell out well in advance. Not only does this boost your average order value right out of the gate, but it also trains your audience for next year. When they see VIP sold out this year, they’ll know they have to buy immediately next season.
You can take this one step further and add a mid-tier ticket option, with more spots available than your super VIP but fewer than the general admission. And fewer perks, of course. If you add this in after your VIP passes have sold out, it will encourage guests to go for the next best option.
Urgency and FOMO shouldn't just be panicked social media posts the week of your event. They should be baked into your ticketing strategy from the moment you launch your pre-sale.
