How to Use QR Codes to Sell More Event Tickets (and Bust the Box Office Line)
4:00

QR codes are one of the easiest ways to drive sales, whether you want to put a code on a printed flyer around town or set up a sign at the door so guests can buy tickets on their phones instead of waiting in line.

Our team gets tons of questions about QR codes from event organizers, and we’ve talked before about how QR code ticketing speeds up check-in. But many of you have the same question: how can I create a custom QR code that links directly to my event page?

We recently added a feature to your Passage dashboard called Event Quicklinks, making it incredibly simple to do exactly that! You can generate and download a QR code or grab a direct URL for your event in seconds.

Why Should I Use Event QR Codes?

Before we show you how to generate them, let's look at the two biggest ways a custom QR code can help your event:

  1. Line-Busting at the Door: Nobody likes waiting in line at the box office. By placing a printed sign with your event’s QR code near the entrance, walk-up guests can simply scan the code, purchase their tickets, and get their digital passes on their phones instantly. You get the sale, and they skip the line.

  2. Frictionless Physical Marketing: If you use posters, flyers, or table tents to promote your event, a QR code bridges the gap between the physical world and your digital checkout. Instead of hoping someone remembers to type in your website later, you give them a way to buy a ticket the exact moment they see your ad.

The Hidden Risks of "Free" Third-Party QR Code Generators

Before Event Quicklinks, organizers often had to Google "free QR code generator," paste their event URL, and download an image. It seems easy enough, but we've seen several events get burned by this workaround.

Here is what often happens with third-party generators:

  • Broken Links: Imagine printing a batch of beautiful, expensive permanent signs. They work perfectly for your first season. But when you pull them out of storage the following year, the QR code is dead because the free generator expired your link or purged inactive accounts.

  • Unexpected Ads: Many "free" services secretly inject ads into your link. When a guest scans your code to buy a ticket, they are forced to watch a pop-up ad or wait through a countdown before they are finally redirected to your ticketing page. That friction frustrates guests and costs you sales.

When you use Passage’s built-in Event Quicklinks, your QR codes are permanently tied to your event URL. They will never randomly expire, and your guests will never be forced to look at third-party ads before buying a ticket.

4.Copy URL or Download QR Code: Choose your format. A menu will pop up with two options:

  • Copy URL: Instantly copies the direct link to your event page (perfect for social media, emails, or text blasts).
  • Download QR Code: Downloads an image file of your QR code that you can drop straight into your flyer, poster, or day-of-event signage designs.

That’s it! Once you download the file, you can hand it off to your graphic designer, or drop it right into Canva or any other design platform to create your marketing materials.
